With the US Open Looming in a week or so, it brings back memories of another big tournament, albeit an amateur one. The United States Amateur was hosted by the most historic Merion Golf Club. This golf course with lush greens that would make your own rugs seem like a hardwood floor, was serving another of it's majors in 1966. How could I ever forget the first and last big tournament that I would caddy in.

My man was from Oklahoma and his name was Richard Knorville. I don't remember much about his playing ability, except he was defeated by Jack Nicklaus a little earlier in Jacks amateur career. It wasn't the fact my player missed the 1966 cut by a shot or two, it was what happened shortly before the tournament took place.

My home was just a mile and a half from the Merion Golf Club and the same distance to the driving range. Then it was known as The City Line Driving Range, for it sits just off the road with the same name. My mom, who was so kind and understanding of my desire to practice my golf swing, would take me and bring me from this golf range. This one particular early evening, maybe around 7 0'Clock or so, I was hitting my driver and saw this man hitting line drive after line drive. I should say, arrow like shots that were dead straight. One after another, I couldn't believe how accurate he was. I went back to hitting my wild tee driver shots all over the range.

I looked up again and noticed something that was unusual to me about this man. He was wearing a long sleeve shirt and a tie. It was fairly warm on this June evening. I also realized this man was quite a bit older than I was. Being just 17, anyone was practically older than me. I was a good 10 booths away and could not get a good look at his face. I stopped what I was doing and went over to watch this man and his seemingly perfect golf swing. Because I knew about the upcoming tournament, that I was caddying in obviously, I was speechless when I realized I was watching one of the most gifted golfers in the history of the game.

When a buddy of mine suggested I come for a working vacation, I thought he was exaggerating as he described that "Phoenix has a golf course every block or two!" As it turns out, he wasnt lying, and only exaggerating a little. A Phoenix Golf Vacation has an incredible number of golf courses sprawled across its sprawling boundaries. After a weeks winter visit, I can understand why he chooses to live in Phoenix. With so many people having to travel through Phoenix on business, it only makes sense to pause and enjoy a few holes along the way.

Raven Golf Course had a Phoenix Golf Package Special and was on my To Play list. A Gary Panks design, this course got an honorable mention back in 2000. Something about the place has drawn my curiosity since, but Id never bothered to take the time during any of my runs down I-10 to stop in and play there before. The first of 5 good days out was well spent there.

One of the other surprises was the quality of instruction available. It seems Phoenix is working hard towards making itself the golf capital of the world, both in terms of public-access regulation courses, and by making as many great golfers as possible. Driving ranges everywhere, of course, and the views arent too hard on the eye either. The humidity may be a bit bolstered by all of the terraforming, but seeing that lush green everywhere makes it more than worth it.

Phoenix seems to have sprung up entirely from its geography; its the place where I-10 takes its turn back west when heading towards the California coast. When Im driving west, I see it as that home-stretch marker on my way towards Los Angeles. As a hub city, it serves a tremendous number of people, so having all these courses ends up making good sense. The wait on a reservation might be intolerable without them. Instead, one finds a pleasant fraternity and warm welcome. Each place seems comfortable with their piece of the pie. I like that I felt relaxed, at ease, able to take my time and enjoy the day without worrying about holding anyone up or having them play on through.

No trip to Phoenix would be near complete without a run up to neighboring Scottsdale. Thats where the area really shines. There the resorts, spas and pampering kick in, and I get that big grin on my face at the end of the day. Those make the place a great destination for a couple or family. I get my golf in on top-notch PGA host courses, the Missus and clan get what they want too. They can play tennis, or take a tour of the desert in a Hummer, check out the arts scene Scottsdale makes it a win-win golf destination most seasons.

A word of fair warning: Phoenix is not the place to go during July and August. But with 10 other glorious months of the year that are all blue skies, mild temps and sunshine, Id hardly say thats a problem. The sheer volume of clubs, resorts and public courses more than makes up for it. World-class resorts waiting to pamper you hand and foot after a pleasant day spent doing what you love the most whats not to like? Phoenix may very well be the golf capital of the world.

There are three basic golf grips that you can use: the overlapping grip, the baseball grip, and the interlocking grip. Well cover each of those in a minute. Heres the basic rule for gripping a golf club.

Start by holding the club directly in front of you with your right hand with the club head pointing away from you at about a 45 degree angle.

Next grip the club with your left hand. The club will be mainly in the palm across the pads at the base of the fingers. However, the club will lie across the first section of the index finger. The thumb will be positioned straight on top of the golf club shaft. Relative to the golf club, the thumb will be in the twelve oclock position.

Now, with your right hand, grip the golf club just above your left hand with the fingers, not the palm, of your right hand. The thumb will be positioned slightly off to the left. Relative to the golf club, the thumb will be in an eleven oclock position.

If you have gripped the golf club correctly, only the first two knuckles of your left hand will be visible. Also, your left thumb should be completely hidden under your right hand. The index finger position of your right hand will look and feel like a gun trigger finger. Here are three of the most common golf grips and how to use them:

1- The overlapping grip is the most common golf grip used. It is used mostly by male golfers and those with strong wrists and forearms. The little finger of the right hand lies on top of or overlaps the index finger on the left hand.

2- The baseball grip is most commonly used by younger golfers, females, seniors, and those with weaker wrists and arms. The index finger of the left hand and the little finger of the right hand meet but do not overlap or interlock.

If your golf grip pressure is right, the club could almost be pulled out of your hands, but not quite. A correct golf grip will make you feel as if you are holding the club mostly in the palm and last three fingers of your left hand. Regardless, both hands should hold the club with equal pressure. A correct golf grip doesnt guarantee a successful golf swing, however, a defective golf grip will almost always result in a failed golf swing.
